INDEPENDENT RUG TUFTING GUIDE

Cut Pile vs Loop Pile Tufting: What Changes?

See the differences in look, finishing, machinery and practical project decisions.

In cut pile, the gun cuts the yarn ends as it forms the tuft, creating a soft and fuzzy carpet-like surface. In loop pile, the loops remain intact for a more structured and often lower-profile texture.

Neither finish is universally better. Cut pile is a natural fit for plush graphic rugs and later carving. Loop pile can support dense, distinctive surface texture but requires the right gun settings and yarn handling.

Choose by your intended outcome

  • Soft rug with a sculpted edge: consider cut pile.
  • Pattern with a neat, nubby texture: consider loop pile.
  • Unsure or planning mixed textures: a genuine cut-and-loop model offers flexibility.
  • Very deep shag: select a compatible high-pile machine rather than assuming a standard gun can be adjusted that far.
