INDEPENDENT RUG TUFTING GUIDE

Yarn for Rug Tufting: Wool, Acrylic and Polyester

A practical comparison of yarn fibers and feed reliability.

Tufting yarn affects both appearance and machine behavior. Fiber type, twist, thickness, number of strands and dye uniformity all matter. A yarn marketed for knitting may tuft successfully, but it is not guaranteed to feed consistently through every machine.

Many makers use acrylic for accessible decorative projects, wool for resilient traditional rugs, and polyester for specific color and wear needs. Evaluate the rug’s intended use before selecting material solely by price.

Buying checklist

  • Check whether the supplier explicitly supports tufting guns.
  • Use a consistent size and strand count across color changes unless the texture difference is intentional.
  • Buy enough from matching dye lots when consistency matters.
  • Make a short test patch and observe stitch holding and pile thickness.
  • Estimate by sample weight, especially for deep pile and densely tufted projects.

The yarn planner offers a broad preliminary range, not a purchase guarantee.
